Glycemic Index Fruit

Expert Author Jonathan T Edwards

Low glycemic index fruit is fruit that has low carbohydrate content but rich in fiber and vitamins. Low glycemic index fruit is healthier and should be added to your diet. Whole fruit is better than fruit juice and a much better choice because it is more nutritious. To reap the maximum benefit of fruit juice, you should not add sugar to it. If you want to make it sweet, you can use honey or brown sugar. You should not use refined sugar to sweeten fruit juice because it is unhealthy. Eating low GI fruit can offer many benefits. It can improve your sensitivity to insulin. It improves the sugar in the blood system and prevents you from having diabetes. Besides, it can reduce the amount bad cholesterol in the blood system.

Not all fruits have a low index ranking. The two fruits that have the highest index score are watermelon and dates. Watermelon and dates are nutritious although they contain lots of simple carbohydrates. Eating watermelon and dates can cause the blood sugar level to rise quickly. You can limit the consumption of these two fruits to control the sugar level in the blood. Fruits with a low index ranking include orange, apple, apricot, grapefruit, blueberries, cherry and pears. Cherry is a low glycemic index fruit that has the lowest score so it is very good for your health. Fruits have a large amount of antioxidants. Antioxidants can strengthen the immune system of the body and help to protect your body from diseases. Blueberry is an excellent source of vitamin K, A and C. It also contains minerals such as manganese to protect the body from diseases.

It is best that you eat fresh fruit. Processed fruits such as canned or packaged fruits are no good because they are processed in a factory. After being processed, the fruit is no longer as nutritious as before. Processed fruits have lesser fibers and vitamins. By eating fresh low glycemic index fruit, your body will benefit from the nutrients and minerals. Pickled fruits are also not so good because of the high amount of salt and sugar.

If you want to find out the index value of each fruit, you should reference a good GI food guide. Lots of websites offer free low glycemic index fruit information. If you don't know how to include the fruits in your diet, you can ask your doctor to help you. Your doctor can formulate a diet plan that suits you.
