One of my favorite container flowers are the Gloriosa daisies. They come in a variety of colors and are short lived perennials. They come in all colors from yellow -orange to red- bronze or Russet. They like full sun and well drained potting mix with ½ strength liquid fertilizer every two weeks.
One of my favorite Gloriosa daisies for the container is the Cherokee Sunset. The rich blooms are from yellow and orange to bronze and mahogany. The blooms are 3 to 4 1/2 inches across and can be semi-or fully double with a growth habit 30 inches tall and they hold up better against mildew better than other Gloriosa Daisies in my containers.
A good Gloriosa Daisy for the birds is the Cappuccino. The Cappuccino is compact and well branched and it is covered with large orange flowers. Cutting of the flowers will encourage the plant to send up more buds. Let some of the flowers go to seed to feed the birds during the cold winter months.
Another container Gloriosa Daisy that I just love is the Cherry Brandy. The flowers are the typical three-inch diameter blooms as with most Gloriosa daisies but the flowers themselves are mahogany-red. The plant is well branched and drought and heat resistant. Keep them dry as they do tend to have some powdery mildew in the late summer if you keep the leaves wet. It will produce seed heads that can be collected and stored to plant next spring.
No container plant is as different then the Prairie Sun. The Prairie Sun has a light green center surrounded by a colorful orange band. By the middle of the summer growing season the Prairie Sun has enough flowers for several bouquets and still enough to add beauty in your container garden. This radiant plant grows 36 inch tall.
Denver Daisy has rust, brown and yellow flowers that look fantastic most of the summer. They can grow with just a half a day of sun. The 24 inch plant produces long-lasting blooms right up until frost which is a bit later in the season then other Gloriosa daisies.
No Gloriosa Daisy container garden would be complete without the Tigereye Gold. The plant is multi-branched with stems full of 4-6 inch blooms that last for weeks. I like to plant several containers together with the Tigereye Gold.
One of the best dwarfs Gloriosa Daisy for a container garden is the Maya. The Maya stays at 18 inches tall with double 4-5 inch flowers looking very much like the same small mums in your garden. Plant 3-5 in the front of other plantings in the container to add beauty and interest.
These are but a few of the wonderful world of Gloriosa Daisy's that can be grown in your containers.
