Children would love to have a dog as a pet in the house, just to spend time playing with it and watching it perform small tricks by itself or with the help of the dog training you give it. People have dogs for various reasons. Some dogs are trained to do service to the police department by catching thieves, saving people from danger, etc.
However, families usually have dogs to take care of their house when they are out or in, to play with them during free time and to show off to the regular dog shows and to their neighborhood that they have a fantastic dog. For these reasons your dog training to make your pet perform small tricks should be simple and harmless.
Teaching your dog small tricks like showing its paw, sitting up on its hind legs, walking on its hind legs etc, seem interesting but they should be taught only to the respective breed. Not all dogs can do the same tricks that Poodles and Pomeranians can do. Similarly, all dogs cannot be detectives like the well trained German Shepherds.
The best way to start a successful dog training session with your pet is to build a bond between the dog and you. The pet should feel confident that you will not harm it. In this way the dog's intelligence increases and he tends to listen carefully to you and take commands with a light heart.
For instance, a basic trick you can teach your pet as a pup is to roll over. No doubt to the dog it is not a trick as it rolls many times while playing, but if should be done at your command you should start when it is in a lying down position. Show a piece of its favorite snack from the opposite direction and make it roll over to get the snack. In this way keep saying the word 'roll over' to it. Slowly the dog will understand the word and will start listening to your command snack or not.
Dog training should be conducted only for a few minutes each day, or the dog will stop listening. Throw a ball and teach it to run behind the ball and bring it back. In the beginning you should run together and allow it to get the ball in its mouth and come with it in the mouth till the starting point. Slowly it will learn that it is its own responsibility to pick up anything that is thrown. While practicing ball, don't throw the ball very far, this can tire the dog.
Your dog's intelligence is less and hence, dog training should be done in a step by step manner without being rude to the animal. All training sessions should end with praise and a treat for the dog. This is very encouraging for the next session.
