They go for headlines to get you to watch their segment so that they can catch you with a commercial, so that they can pay their bills. What the media advertises is rarely the whole story. Sure there have been some changes, but they did not bring student loan programs to a halt.

Some of the big changes that upset many of the big lenders are the changes make by the new law lumped in with the healthcare reform bill. The student loan changes that were included in the Healthcare Reform Bill takes away the loan guarantees so that the government no longer has to pay for defaulted student loans. It also took away the intermediaries by directly collecting the interest.

Also since the interest rates for loans being so low to banks and other lenders (less than 1 percent) and some student loans getting an interest rate of at least 5 percent, that's a lot of money changing hands. The private lenders get even more since their rates are sometimes higher than the government rates. Apply for a many loans as you can, you may get denied by a few, but you will also get approved by a few.
