Getting Started With Ficus Bonsai Trees

Expert Author M. Levenhagen

For years now I've found I've been a big fan of bonsai trees; especially Ficus Bonsai Trees. They are fun to take care of and to shape into their individual unique forms. In fact, I think that's one of the coolest things about bonsai's; each is unique and has it's own shape and personality.

I remember when I brought home my first one. It was a fully developed one - I tried a seedling, but that's another story. The excitement of sitting down with it and snipping a leaf here and a branch there is hard to describe. There's something wonderful, peaceful and relaxing about sitting down with your bonsai tree to work on it; and at the same time exciting!

If you are interested in Bonsai, definitely take into consideration what type you get. Are you going to want one that is mostly cared for indoors? Then go with something like a Ficus bonsai. They are normally cared for indoors; especially in the winter time. I like indoor bonsai's or plants in general. You need to worry less about the elements, will have less problems with bugs, and other outside problems.

Another thing I love about bonsai is the feel it gives a room. They can really add a bit of style to an otherwise boring room; giving it a bit of an ancient, asian feel.

They are great conversation pieces. Any time you have company you know they'll gravitate to that beautiful, little tree you have on your stand. There is a wide range of pots you can use for them to match your decor and your own personality. They can really look nice if you put together something that fits your style of tree.

Again, you will want to take into consideration what type of tree you start with. My early efforts failed miserably because I didn't fully research what type of tree to get or what they'd need for care. The Ficus can be a great one to start with because they are a little easier to care for, indoor and still offer all the things that make having a bonsai great!
