Born on August 10, 1960 in the city of Andalusia in Spain, is one of the few famous Spaniards actors who made it in Hollywood - José Antonio Domínguez Banderas or popularly known as Antonio Banderas.
His father José Domínguez was a Guardia policeman and his mother Ana Banderas worked as a school teacher. Banderas only has one younger bother named Francisco and he used his mother last name as his screen name.
At first, Badneras wanted to be a professional soccer player. However, when he had an accident where he broke his feet, that dream ended. His acting career started when he worked for small theater during Movida era, at the age of 19. He gained attention from audience when he starred in several films of movie director Pedro Almodóvar from 1982 to 1990. Some of this movies were "Laberinto de pasiones" (Labyrinth of Passion, 1982), "La Ley del Deseo", (Law of Desire, 1987), "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios" (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, 1988), "¡Átame!" (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, 1989).
He started his Hollywood career in 1922, when he starred in his first American film "The Mambo Kings". He landed a supporting role in the Oscar-winning movie "Philadelphia" in 1993. He also starred in a movie directed by Robert Rodriguez "Desperado" in 1995. Then, he made a musical movie with Madonna in 1996 - "Evita." In 1998, he made "The Mask of Zorro," making him the very first Spanish actor who portrayed the character of Zorro, 80 years after the creation of Zorro. In 2000, he was offered by Ridley Scott to play the character of a peasant in the film "Gladiator", a role that Bandearas was reluctant to accept. In the end, he accepted the part but demanded a $50,000 talent fee, the world's highest salary ever paid for an extra. Aside from being an actor, Banderas is also a singer, film producer, and film director.
