A few decades ago, we only had a few choices when it came to our favorite music. In the 80s we had a choice of cassette tapes or radio. Cassette tapes weren't very durable, and the sound quality wasn't all that great, but they were a whole lot better than the bulky records of the past. We could also listen to a Walkman, a small portable radio, but the reception was pretty poor. In the 90s we progressed to compact disk. That was a big technological advance. Compact disks, or CDs, were much more portable, durable, and had a much better sound quality. There were still some major challenges with CDs though. It wasn't possible to purchase just one song from an artist. You had to purchase the entire album to get a song. This made purchasing music expensive and inconvenient. Radio was always an option, but you had to take the good with the bad, there wasn't much control over what you listened to.
In the 2000s, a technological advance came along the revolutionized how people listen to music. The introduction to online music allowed consumers to listen to, buy, and find music on their terms. Music online is a much more convenient way to get what you want to hear. Music online lets the consumer download the songs they want without having to pay for the music they don't want on the same album. This makes music much more affordable and convenient for the average consumer. In the past, people had to go to a music store or a department store to find music. With music online they can search for, listen to, purchase, and download from the privacy of their own home.
Music online has also revolutionized the way people find new music. In the past, radio play and word of mouth were really the only ways consumers had to find new music. Small bands had a really hard time getting recognition if they weren't played on the radio. Music online has allowed a whole new technique of marketing that makes it easier for consumers to search for genres they like, and bands to reach out to listeners all over the world. Because it doesn't require a fancy record deal to get fans, musicians are finding more efficient ways to gain popularity.
Music has made a lot of changes over the decades. From the style of music we heard to the clothes they wore, music changed with the times. By far the biggest change we've seen in the music industry is the technology that brings the music to us. Music online makes it easier for fans to find and listen to the music they love, and it makes it easier for musicians to reach out directly to fans across the world. Who knows what kind of changes we can expect in the music industry in the coming decades. One thing's for sure, music online has changed the face of the music industry, and now fans won't accept anything less.
