The best way to get the most our of a party is to make it a point to talk to as many guest as possible. Even at very large parties, you can "work" the room (get around to talking to many people) in about an hour. You just need to approach it with a plan.
One thing to remember is to go straight to your host when you arrive, as well as, when you leave. Don't try to stick close to your date or spouse all evening. Also, don't limit your conversation to just those you know well or see all the time.
The entrance or front door can be a trap, try to stay away from there. The food table and the drink bar are also areas where you can find yourself stuck and forced to remain on the fringe of the party. The best maneuver is to move away from the entrance as soon as you have greeted your host. Instead, go right to the middle of the party. It's much easier to circulate among the guest from the center of the action.
Start off by approaching the person you like the least. Once you finish that conversation, you can move on to other guest whom you truly enjoy more. Next, move on to someone you don't know, or perhaps, someone standing alone. You never know, the person standing alone may be the next Bill Gates.
One important thing to remember, no matter how good the conversation, or how much you like a particular individual, do not dominate any one person's time. A party is not the place for long heart to heart talks, or for confiding your life's history. Keep yourself moving by politely breaking off conversations.
Over all, today's conversation at parties is more relaxed and can include all the people around you. Regardless of whether you are the host or a guest, you have a certain responsibility to help ensure that conversation flows easily and that no one is made to feel left out. Party conversation is a great place for making new friends and visiting with old ones.
