George Clooney Delivers the Laughs on Satellite TV

While George Clooney's career began to take off with ER and continued with Out of Sight, many fans did not really catch on until he got involved with comedies. Sure, films like Syriana and Michael Clayton feature Clooney in meatier roles, but the laugh fests were just more fun. George Clooney was certainly born to play comedies. Here are his five best on satellite TV.

1. Men Who Stare at Goats. This Grant Heslov picture, based on a novel which dealt with the attempt to build a 'New Age' U.S. Army, has many terrific moments. One of the finest of all involves Clooney trying to stare the life out of a goat to prove his psychic intensity. Kevin Spacey, Ewan McGregor and Jeff Bridges round the cast of this picture now showing on premium satellite TV networks.

2. O Brother, Where Art Thou? As for precedents in American cinema, there really are none, so the Coen Brothers have to be commended on their originality with this sprawling road movie that sometimes breaks into fantasy. It's a fun ride, however you would like to classify it, with Clooney and John Turturro leading a ragtag trio away from the law and in search of some treasure. Tim Blake Nelson nearly steals the film as the third man with his terrific performance. This one should be seen unedited with full HD quality, as the cinematography and music are first-rate as well.

3. Ocean's Eleven. The original was a little boring, but it had Frank Sinatra and his crew in it and they seemed to be having a lot of fun. Steven Soderbergh went in the same direction, believing the cast having fun would mean the audience would be having fun, too. It paid off, in general, enough so that two sequels ended up being made. The original might be the most fun (as is usual), with Brad Pitt and Matt Damon playing off Clooney and Andy Garcia playing the bad guy.

4. Burn After Reading. When disgraced CIA man John Malkovich falls off the wagon, things start to slip out of control. The man with whom his wife is having an affair (Clooney) starts to suspect that he's being suspected. In the meantime, Clooney's wife is suspicious of him, while a woman trying to deal secrets to the Russians (Frances McDormand) might be more than the type of affair Clooney has bargained for. A hilarious spy comedy from the Coen Brothers, this film is a hit on HBO in HD.

5. Leatherheads. It might not be the greatest film to bear the Clooney name on it, but Leatherheads is a lot better than the reviews that greeted it in 2008. John Krasinski of Office fame has one of his best film roles to date, while Renee Zellwegger is her usual, bubbly self in the role of a 1920's reporter on the Bulldogs' beat. Give this underestimated comedy a second chance on satellite TV comedy networks.
