Any general contractor you hire should be established in business and have a good enough credit line with his suppliers to begin your job with a minimum amount of payment up front. Most service providers will have a payment amount and date agreed upon in the contract before they begin work so you know when you need to get payments in.
Most service providers will require some payment before they begin the job and as the job progresses to significant portions, another payment will be due. The balance of the payment is generally due when the work is completed and you have done your walk through with the contractor to sign off on the job.
