Mexico is a top vacation spot and there is no doubt why. It is an amazing place that is not just somewhere to catch some sun on the sandy beaches. There are some great hot spots, like Tulum, that let you combine the historic sites and the great beaches for one unforgettable vacation.
Tulum is located just south of Playa del Carmen and Akumai. It is a town that features a great archeological site and a lovely beach coastline. This beautiful place is located on limestone cliffs that overlook the waters of the Caribbean.
Tulum is a nice mix of history and the beaches Mexico is well known for. You will get to experience both of them right in the same area where you can focus on having a good time instead of traveling about the country to see all the different types of sites.
History is important in Tulum. It was part of the Mayan Riviera. The archeological site here was built between 1200 and 1450. It is clouded in mystery, as are all Mayan ruins. The Mayans just abandoned their cities during the 16th century.
Tulum was very active from the 13th to the 15th century. It was one of the last cities of the Mayans. It was a trading post due to its location off the water. The tallest building of the city is El Castillo, which served as a lighthouse that guided travelers through the reefs.
A unique aspect of the city was the wall that surrounds it in three sides. This wall is seven meters thick and up to five meters tall. The wall features a walkway so warriors could defend the city. The remaining side of the city is protected by the sea.
Today 60 buildings still stand at the site, which are all open for touring. Plaques adorn the walls to guide visitors. This allows for a self guided tour of the ruins.
It also features amazing beaches, like those you expect from Mexico's coastline. They are considered some of the world's top scenic beaches, attracting visitors from around the globe.
The beaches feature turquoise water and white sands. It is the typical beach you would expect in paradise. The coral reefs off the coast are a great place for diving and snorkeling. The waters welcome kayakers, divers, and fishers.
The reef at Tulum, the Great Mayan Reef, goes from Cancun, Mexico to Roatan, Honduras making it the second largest in the world. It is 1000 kilometers with 120 kilometers at the Tulum beach.
The waters off the beach offer a chance to see 84 different types of coral and over 450 types of fish and other sea creatures. It is a true adventure.
Tulum offers you a little bit of everything. It is an area of Mexico that is quiet, beautiful and offers plenty to keep you busy. You will never forget your stop in this place because it is such a rich place to visit.
