Gay Rights in America

Gay rights in America is a very hot topic these days. In my opinion, gay rights is one of the biggest no-brainers in our society today. Let's take a look at some of the reasons conservatives give for wanting to deny homosexuals equal rights.

1. Marriage is meant for pro-creation.

So does this mean that only people who intend to or have the ability to procreate can get married? What about a couple that is heterosexual and just decide they don't want to have kids? What about a hetero couple that does not have the ability to have kids? What about a heterocouple that met in their 80s and can't have kids? This argument is moronic. Marriage is a union of two people. It is not simply for the purposes of procreation. And let's not forget, you don't need to be married to procreate so I don't know how those two ever got tied together. There are a few married couples in my family that don't have kids and never will. They are not just productive members of society, but some of the brightest minds you will ever meet. Are they in the wrong for not having kids?

2. Gay marriage destroys the sanctity of all marriage.

Really? Let me ask you this....if gay marriage was legal at the time you met your wife or husband, would you have thought twice about marrying them because gays could also get married? If gays were allowed to get married how, would your marriage lessen in its worth? Come on people, gay marriage would do nothing to the value of your marriages, and you know it. This is a horrible argument.

3. The Bible is against gay marriage.

The bible also speaks of women being less than a man.

Ephesians 5:22-33

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Colossians 3:18
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

1 Timothy 2:9-10
I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

Proverbs 12:4
A wife of noble character is her husband's crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.

DEUTERONOMY 22:13-21
If it is discovered that a bride is not a virgin, the Bible demands that she be executed by stoning immediately.

MARK 12:18-27
If a man dies childless, his widow is ordered by biblical law to have intercourse with each of his brothers in turn until she bears her deceased husband a male heir.

DEUTERONOMY 25:11-12
If a man gets into a fight with another man and his wife seeks to rescue her husband by grabbing the enemy's genitals, her hand shall be cut off and no pity shall be shown her.

Is this really the book you want to quote?

4. Allowing gays to wed will lead down a path of other ridiculous marriage desires.
Conservatives like to use this "slippery slope" argument by saying if we allow gay marriage, then someone will want to marry their child, or cousin or an animal. Yes, I've had religious fanatics argue with me that once these doors are opened, there is nothing to stop a man from marrying his goat. Idiotic.

I think that the slippery slope argument can be made just as easily in the other direction. Once these people get gay marriage done away with forever, what's to stop them from then saying that in order to get married you have to have a college degree or make a certain level of income or have a certain IQ? Let's be honest, those slippery slope arguments are more possible than a man wanting to marry a goat.

We must allow all citizens of this free nation of our to have the same rights as anyone else. Nowhere in today's society is this more visible than in the current gay rights debate. We have lived in a country where it was illegal for women to vote, for black people to own land or vote or run a business and we righted those wrongs. Now we must right this wrong. Denying equal rights to someone because they are gay is delegating them to less of a citizen than you are, and that is wrong. I am ashamed that our country hasn't taken the steps to ensure all gay people have equal rights. I am equally ashamed that my President has decided to stand with the religious fanatics of this country who honestly believe this garbage. Mr. President, do the right thing and squash this hatred. Allow ALL citizens of this country the ability to enjoy the same rights as you and I do.
