After you have been growing a vegetable garden for a while you could just be feeling a bit dissatisfied at how bare looking it appears.
I also began our gardening interest with a vegetable garden. Before long I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t quite as pleasing to look at as I thought it was. I heard from a friend that the use of perennial flowers could be a great way to liven up my garden without adding any extra work for me.
Flowers that return every year without the need for replanting are called perennials.
For us it began a few perennials and have found that perennial flowers are durable. During their off seasons, the flowers and stems die back so that you can hardly even tell the plant is there.
Before deciding whether to put in perennials or not, make sure that your soil has good drainage. If the soil stays saturated for long periods of time you need to build a raised bed.
How to test your soil for proper drainage, dig yourself a hole and pour it full of water. Give it a full day, and then fill it with water again. All traces of water should be gone within 10 hours. If the hole isn’t completely dry, you’re going to have to build a raised bed.
Making a decision about which perennials to pick can be a bit time consuming. Our goal was to have your perennials flowering as much as possible throughout the year. Create an outline for the entire season.
Research the various types of perennials you desire, and create a timeline of when they all flower. Plan it right and, you can have a different perennial blooming at any point in the season. When you get just the right mixture of seeds can give your yard a ever changing array of colors and appearance.
When you go to purchase the seeds from your local nursery, try to get a custom seed mixture for your planting zone. Finding a mixture for your zone takes the really tough research part out of the job.
Usually these seed mixtures are put together for your local planting zone, and for that reason do a great job of having flowers forever growing in your yard.
You should definitely use mulch when planting your perennials. This is going to cut down on the overall amount of work you be required to do, by reducing the number of weeds while it increases the amount of water retention. Bark.
Note: When you actually go to plant your seeds, you can put them in small clumps according to the instructions. This is because they tend to spread out, therefore if you plant them too close they are going to crowd each other and won’t grow well.
It's always a good time to be thinking about perennial flowers.
