Gaming With a Mac

Expert Author Matthew Anton

Currently, many developers are producing games exclusively for Mac, but it is limited. Blizzard and Microsoft are among the companies that produce Mac titles. They have sought the third party services for the Mac titles. Most of these services are inefficient because of the technical issues, licensing and release delays. Apple gains some gaming space with Boot Camp. It partitions the Windows for improving its efficiency.

Mac games are plagued by their performance gaps that are not seen in Windows. You can notice the performance differences even in the current releases like Valve's Steam client. Companies like Blizzard are playing fair by releasing major games for both PC and Mac at the same instant. Therefore, a few Mac gamers are keeping up with PCs, but unfortunately, most of these games are not instantly released, there is a delay all the time. For example, Valve's Half-Life 2, Mac version was released only five years after its windows version.

AnandTech compared the Steam for Windows and the Steam for Mac side-by-side. The result is Steam for Windows is sharper and faster. Since the games are playable, casual players usually do not mind, but for the other people who notice the details and performance optimization and growth is required. Apple and the game developers would work together to fix this gap. The performance and the gaming development on Mac will be affected by the secretive nature of Apple. They will accept the advancements only if it is done their way. Even though they support open standards they concentrate on developing it in relatively closed platforms. Apple has the complete control over the content available on iPhone, and limits the developer's interaction with the device. Despite these limitations, Mac games are running at playable levels.

Most of the hardware's produced by Apple are fully capable of its gaming. Despite the performance gaps, the games are usable. Hardcore gamers will not find the tweaked systems and frame rates in Mac, but Apple seems to allow more options for performance tailoring as the Mac gaming increases. Game Center is one of the recent developments from Apple. These developments suggest that Apple is motivated to keep gaming alive. By considering the popularity of iPhone games, it seems that Mac games will develop faster than before. Apple will not sacrifice stability for supporting the performance and features.

Windows games are faster because of its graphics drivers. Their profiles are suitable for many games, so when a new game is released it runs as fast as it can. Mac does not have graphics drivers like Windows, but it has global approaches like OpenGL. This acts as an integral layer in Mac OS instead of being a part of graphics driver. OS X has the APIs and the core technologies with a solid framework. The developers can tap into the APIs and it is hoped that other games will start their way to Mac faster than before. Many companies are considering Mac as a second-tier platform for gaming but the scene is changing now.
