The goal of therapy after a mild stroke or head injury is to return to as close an activity level as is possible. The challenge to professionals has been to find a way to do this that is practical and enjoyable so that patients will commit to their therapy more readily. Many therapists have begun to use video games and backyard games to achieve this. An example of this is the game of cornhole.
The game of cornhole is very basic and easy to learn. A heartbeat to learn and a lifetime of fun to enjoy. This is a game that has many practical uses. There are even some therapy professionals that recommend this game for elderly patients. The balance and coordination required are light, but help to retrain muscles after a stroke or when a patient has been bed-ridden for a period of time.
The game of cornhole has very few rules. Just throw the cornhole bag from behind the front of the cornhole board and the bag must stay on the opposing board or go into the hole to score. The distance between the boards is not great so anyone can play, even small children. Since the scoring in this game is simple it can be used to help a child learn entry level addition.
Elderly patients who have had mild strokes and are trying to recover their hand-eye coordination can make use of this game. The balance needed is slightly more than what is required to stand and the strength needed is minimal. The game can be played with a therapist using a gait belt to insure the safety of the patient. One other benefit is that the patient will need to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. This can help to alleviate some of the depression that is felt after a stroke.
No matter what your reason for owning a cornhole game board set, you will enjoy the outdoors, light competition, and the company of family and friends. Let the fun and friendship begin!
