FurReal pets have become frequent companions of young children since the launch of the FurReal Friends range by toy manufacturer Hasbro in 2002. Using animatronics, Hasbro has produced a wide range of interactive lifelike animals that capture children's imaginations when they "come to life." Indeed, Biscuit My Lovin' Pup and the Butterscotch Pony need little introduction to any parent of a young child. However, as delightful as these plush toys are, have they finally reached their sell-by date?

Certainly Hasbro has not been complacent about its early successes. Not only has the range improved in terms of sophistication and realism but it has also diversified to include more exotic animals such as the popular parrot Squawkers McCaw. The implementation of a "Newborn" range has also brought smaller, more affordable "animals" into the homes of many.

This year Hasbro has again extended the FurReal Friends "family" with several new additions including a Cuddle Chimp and Luv Cub Panda. In an inspired move, Hasbro is also breaking into the ethical gift market. When you purchase Zambi the baby elephant, you will be helping some of the poorest children in Africa who have been orphaned by AIDS.

Cuddle Chimp
Complete with his own banana shaped feeding bottle, this adorable Cuddle Chimp loves to be hugged and tickled. You'll know when he's excited as he will make realistic chimp sounds and also clap his hands.

Lil' Patter Pup
With a choice of a tan, white and grey Shih Tzu or auburn Pomeranian, this little pooch enjoys barking, walking and wagging his tail. Complete with his own bone, Lil' Patter Pup likes lots of affection.

Lulu My Cuddlin' Kitty
Dubbed as the "most realistic cat to join the brand," Lulu is a fluffy white and marmalade coloured feline who loves to pamper and preen herself. She "meows" and "purrs", just like a real kitten and simply adores having her tummy rubbed.

Luv Cub Panda
This cuddly black and white panda bear loves giving hugs and playing peek-a-boo.

Teacup Pup

Zambi The Baby Elephant
Zambi is the special charity edition FurReal pet for 2009 who "blows" kisses! He also moves his trunk, wiggles his ears and makes lifelike trumpeting noises. A bracelet is also included together with a booklet about the charity.

Hasbro FurReal Friends are suitable for children aged 4 years and upwards although appear to be particularly popular with young girls between 4 and 8 years of age. Teacup Pups will definitely appeal to any celebrity inspired young females this Christmas whereas the more exotic toys are likely to be a hit with young boys. If you're looking to make a bigger investment then the FurReal Butterscotch or S'Mores Pony is ideal for children up to the age of 8.

So, are FurReal pets still hot Christmas toys? Well, I believe so and they certainly make great gifts not only for Christmas, but also for birthdays and other special occasions. However, with so many to choose from, the most important aspect is checking the full range of toys available and then matching the "pet" to the child you are buying for.
