A lot of people afflicted with diabetes are confused about what kinds of foods they should consume and which are the fruits and vegetables which will suit their medical condition. There are certain simple guidelines which they should follow in this regard.
All diabetics can consume fruits like apples, grapefruit, limes and peaches. The total amount of fruits which can be consumed in one day should be divided into five equal portions which will have to be consumed at five different times of the day. This will ensure that there is no major fluctuation in the levels of blood sugar inside the body. The diet chart of a person afflicted with diabetes should contain large quantities of fiber. This fiber can be found in large quantities in cereals, nuts, seeds, fruits, pulses and vegetables. This will not help in keeping the blood sugar levels stable but it will also ensure that the blood cholesterol levels also stay stable.
All kinds of whole grain foods should definitely be included in the diet. Whole wheat bread or brown bread, whole wheat spaghetti and brown rice can be incorporated into every meal. Brown rice is a much better option when compared to white rice which is usually consumed by people in India and Pakistan. The meat of lambs and beef can be consumed once or twice in a week. Liver kidneys can help in providing for the vitamin requirements of the body. Poultry meat like chicken and duck along with fish can also be very beneficial to people who are diabetic. All kinds of fish and seafood can be consumed. They can be boiled, steamed, baked and grilled instead of deep frying and shallow frying it.
Dairy products which contain small quantities of fat like skimmed milk and low fat cheese and yogurt should be consumed. Eggs can also be consumed but only after discarding the yellow portion and consuming the white portion. Consuming the yellow part of the egg will only increase the levels of cholesterol inside the body. Cottage cheese should also be avoided. Vegetables like onions and garlic will also ensure that the blood sugar levels in the body are stable.
Sugar should be avoided in all forms by people who have been afflicted with diabetes. This also includes sweets and chocolates. Any foods which contain fructose, glucose and dextrose should also be avoided since they will contain large amounts of carbohydrates. Cakes, biscuits, pies, tarts, wheat, rye and pastries are some of the other foods which need to be avoided by diabetics. Vegetables like potatoes, carrots, peas, beans and beet should be avoided. Fruits like water gallons, mangoes, bananas, chikoos, jackfruits, grapes, strawberry and sugarcane should also be avoided.
All kinds of packed food and canned foods should also be avoided. Fresh fruit juices should also be avoided since they contain large amounts of carbohydrates. Foods which contain saturated fat like meat, dairy products, butter and lard should be avoided and oils which contain unsaturated fats like olive oil, corn oil, canula oil, sunflower oil and soya oil should be incorporated into the diet.
