You know some people may look up to you as a role model. Some may find you interesting because you are intellectual and they like to talk with you. There may be others that find you funny and entertaining because you lighten their spirits so they love to be around you. Or maybe you just have beauty, a perfect body, or a refreshing look. It may seem the more people flock your way, the more a friend's jealousy heightens.
So, what do you do? First, be yourself. If a friend's jealousy is about to ruin a relationship, you have to stop and evaluate the situation to see if their jealousy merits attention. In some cases, the root cause of jealousy can be tackled and smoothed over to eliminate problems. One of the major causes of friend's jealousy often is trust. Do they trust you?
Another cause of a friend's jealousy might be because they feel inferior. They could possibly even feel left out or neglected. Your friend's jealousy could also be connected with them feeling inept or insecure. A worst case scenario is they they have good reasons for being jealous because of your actions.
For example, someone may stop and talk to you or know you by name...your close friend might say to herself or himself, 'how do you know them?', or 'when did you meet them?'. If they are asking this because they are jealous, then you may have a problem. If you've ever had this type of friend's jealousy then you already know how jealousy can creep into a friendship.
If there is no reason to justify your friend's jealousy, you'll need to talk to them and find why they are insecure or why they are feeling insecure around you. They'll open up and let you know what is making them feel jealous and most likely they'll explain why as well. If they don't -- ask them directly what is going on. Be nice of course, but still be direct and ask what's going on.
Although you don't want to change your own personality to make someone else happy, since this will make you miserable, you should look at how they feel. See if there's some flexibility you can lend to the situation so the friend's jealousy can be eliminated from your friendship.
If they feel you're too friendly and talkative to strangers, maybe try to limit talking to strangers when they are around. At the very least be conscious of their feelings. If you want to continue to talk to strangers, maybe try talking to people of your same sex when you're in your friend's presence. Talking to the opposite sex may stir up anxiety in your friend.
Especially if your friends is -- well -- more than a friend.
If you like to party hearty and stay out all night, this could be a cause of a deep jealousy if you're in a relationship with a jealous friend. So try coming in at a descent hour. Better yet, invite them to party with you. That way they can see there is no harm.
The best way to cure a friend's jealousy is to keep the channels of communication open and respect their feelings. If you are unable to do that, then the only answer to a friend's jealousy may be to get a new friend.
