Freelance Writing Advice - Why Being Perfect Can Sabotage Your Success

Expert Author Yuwanda Black

Freelance writing is one those professions where it's vital to be perfect. After all, clients pay you to get their copy right. But, striving for perfection can actually keep you from being successful. It doesn't matter if you're an aspiring or existing freelance writer, read on to find out why.

Freelance Writers: Why Clients Expect You to Get It Right

Obviously, a business' image is on the line. If the copy is not right - whether it's grammatical or conceptual errors - it can cost them big. A company's image is closely tied to the livelihood of its employees; employees who depend on a business to pay for food, their mortgage payments, medical insurance, etc. So in this respect, what freelance writers do is extremely important.

Now, to address the title of this article specifically, ie, why trying to be perfect can sabotage your freelance writing success...

If you're a freelance writer and you blog, you will undoubtedly receive emails alerting you to some minor grammatical error you've made, for example. It happens to the best of us.

If you don't know how to deal with it, this kind of correspondence can undermine your success - making you feel insecure and spending valuable time - the next time - trying not to make a mistake. This stunts your production.

When you're a freelance writer, time is your most valuable asset. If you're not producing copy because you're constantly proofing, editing, revising and rewriting in an effort to be perfect, you're losing money.
This cuts into time you could be spending on writing that ebook that's been rolling around your head or putting together your next email campaign.

Common, "It-Must-be-Perfect-Before-I-Start" Freelance Writer Excuses

Following are some common excuses that many freelance copywriters use to stay stuck and not achieve success:

I need to get a website;

I need to get a "new" website;

I need to have my website designed;

I need to have my website logo designed;

I don't have writing samples;

I don't have the right writing samples;

I don't have enough writing samples;

All of these are some derivation of striving for perfection -- whether it's waiting for the perfect time to start something, or until a product is perfect before you release it.

See why waiting to be perfect can inhibit your success?

Now, there is a time to strive for perfection as a freelance writer, ie, on client projects.

Outside of this, if you wait until the freelance writing stars align, you will never achieve success as a freelance copywriter - or anything else. For, part of being successful is making mistakes, learning from them and moving on.
