Many people decide to start a lucrative career as a freelance writer for the Internet because of the money they can make and the freedom they can enjoy. It's a great career for the right person. On the other hand, some people just don't work well at home. What does it take to be a successful content writer?
1) Self discipline - You are your own boss when you work independently at home. Many good employees discover they are not good bosses. Being a good boss to yourself means being able to keep yourself focused on the job at hand. A good copywriter cannot allow himself to be distracted by life around the house or on the Internet. Sometimes writing involves research which can easily be done on the Internet. Unfortunately there are plenty of opportunities to become distracted and if you aren't working, you aren't earning.
2) Independence - The independence we crave can turn into loneliness for some. When you work at home there's no one around to talk to. There aren't any voices across the room to comfort you and keep you company. If you start emailing people or calling or texting just to say hello, you aren't working. If you are the type of person who needs to be around others, it might be best to work in an office and not alone at home.
3) Integrity - When you work alone as a freelance writer you have no one looking over your shoulder or checking your work. It can be tempting to "borrow" someone else's work and incorporate it into your own writing. Using and expanding on an idea you find someplace can be fine, plagiarism is not. The important part of the phrase "original content" it the word original. If you try to pass someone else's work off as your own, you will eventually be found out and that's one of the quickest ways to loss credibility and business. It's just not worth it.
Writing for a living can be extremely rewarding. The career does offer independence, a good income and the ability to work at home, but there are pitfalls.
