Free is Power

The power of free

Real, pure, individual freedom includes both body and mind. It is obvious that even if we are physically unrestricted, as long as our minds are enslaved, then we are not free. This also is mind over matter. The human mind is a sensitive and mysterious device, constantly eager to learn from what it reads and hears. In the economy of today, a lot of businesses are prospecting for clients by doing a few jobs for free. In the technology world, giving away services for free has proved a popular way to suck customers in. You get them excited about what you do and get them to pay for something else you offer.

If you think that this will not work for you, consider Debbie Fields. When nobody came into her first store she put her product on a tray and walked around the mall handing out free samples. What happened? More than 30 years later, they have got nearly 400 stores.

This difference between free and cheap is what Josh Kopelman calls the penny gap.

But free is not quite as stupid or as simple as it sounds. Having free products does not mean that someone is not making money somewhere. A good example is Google. To follow where the money is, you need to shift from the basic view of a market consisting of buyer and seller, to a broad sense of market which has many parties. With free, you are equipped with an emotional charge that perceives what is offered as more valuable.

Benefits of free

Increase sales and profits
Products go viral
It hits a targeted market or a general audience for FREE.
You have an edge on your competitors who doesn't use it.
You do it when you want
It has long term gains

The power of free products or services works on two levels. The first is about engendering a sense of delight, surprise and excitement. Because of the anxiety about the current economy, free products make the consumer feel good in a way that sale prices or lower prices cannot. The second is related to universal cultural norms regarding reciprocity.

Most of us realize that the giving of a gift compels the receiver to return the favour. This does not take into consideration how small the gift may be. This is a cultural practise which is a very powerful force. Who can benefit from being free?

Whether you have a product that you want to advertise or you are the advertiser, you can all benefit from this. There are many websites now which are free for individuals. Imagine what the power of being free can do to your life today.

Well everyone calls me Teddie. I was born in South Carolina I grew up in Brooklyn New York and now I live in Oregon. College seem a distant past where the fun ended and the real life begins.
