The advent of the speed camera marked a radical change in the way police enforce road safety. All over the world, speed cameras gradually became a familiar site on the nation's roads. As technology improved, they moved from film to digital processing, meaning there was no longer the chance that you might escape a speeding fine if the speed camera had ran out of film.

Local councils and local governments were initially very enthusiastic about speed cameras because they believed it would reduce road deaths due to speeding motorists, and increase road safety. Unfortunately for many motorists, they are still paying fines after receiving tickets weeks, even months after the offense occurred. The mere receipt of a speeding fine often frightens people into paying up.
