If you are looking for free sailboat plans online, you should proceed with caution. There are many websites advertising free boat plans online, but the quality and reliability of many of these plans are often questionable. Often, the free blueprints they are offering will not end up saving you money in the long run, since you will end up paying much more to correct flaws from these plans than you would have paid if you had purchased reliable boat plans instead.
What are some of the problems with free sailboat plans? To start, remember that almost any person can post boat blueprints that they have drawn up. This, however, does not mean the boat built from these blueprints will actually float. Free boat plans are often anonymous in nature, meaning you have little supporting evidence that the person who drew up the plans actually knows how to build a boat.
Secondly, since they are free, this means there is no guarantee backing them up either. You can not ask for your money back if the plans fail, since you did not invest anything into them to start. Often free plans are offered up by companies that are actually hoping to sale you something - be it more reliable plans, a boat building kit, or something similar. As such, the free sailboat plans are little more than a gimmick to get you to make a purchase, and the company often has little interest in making sure the plans are complete or accurate. In fact, it may be quite the opposite: they may want you to be frustrated and need to make additional purchases in order to complete the boat illustrated in the plans, so that they can make some money.
There are, however, very affordable boat plans available online that are reliable, have supporting evidence (like customer testimonials) backing them up, and are put together by reputable boat builders. When it comes to finding reliable sailboat plans on the internet, free plans are often simply not worth the risk.
