Fix Your Golf Slice in Four Steps

Step 1: What is a Slice in Golf?

In order to fix your golf swing problem, you first need to understand what that problem is. A slice in golf caused by a faulty position of the club face as it makes contact with the ball. When the club face opens at impact the ball is spun, causing it to spin away from the golfer. This is what is known as a golfers slice. A slice manifests itself in a ball that, though it starts off straight, begins falling away from the golfer. This problem is most common in novice right handed golfers.

Step 2: Know Your Golf Slice

Before you are able to fix your slice, you must understand it. Golfing is a game of consistency and the same is usually true of golfing errors. We tend to make the same mistakes when we golf, over and over. When you have a slice, it tends to be in the same general direction. The severity of your golf slice is dependent on how much your golf club opens as it hits your golf ball. Watch your slice and take note of how quickly it begins to fall off course.

Note: You will need this information to be able to easily fix the problem.

Step 3: It's All About the Hands

The problem of the golf swing isn't in the golf club, but in the golfer. Your hands are the instruments that transfer the body's energy into the club. If they are not straight and not stable, the golf club cannot do its job. When you slice it is for two basic reasons:

  • The golf club is not square to the golf ball when they come into contact.
  • When the golf club and golf ball contact the golf club opens away from the golfer.

This will require a change.

Step 4: Adjusting for Your Condition

On Grip: A solid grip is important for any golfer. If you are slicing you are probably in need of a grip change. There is not enough support on your wrists and you are letting the club fall away. Make sure that the thumb of your front hand (left for right hand-ers) is anchored into the crease of your other hand's thumb palm. This base over the top of your club will provide stability for your club so that it cannot fall off after contacting the golf ball.

On the Club Face: The only thing left is your golf club's position on impact. To fix this adjust your wrists. The level at which you will need to rotate depends on the severity of your golf slice. Every golfers slice is different and only you can tell. Making small adjustments at the driving range before heading out on the golf course is a great first step.
