Human progress has its visible effects on the earth and eco-system. Unfortunately, the more it has helped in improving life, the more it has caused damage to the planet. One very important contributor of pollution and global warming is the fuel. Typically, industries used fossil fuels which are non- renewable and produce a lot of pollution when burned. Although every resource we use replenishes with time, for renewable resources, this process has to be as fast as they are consumed. The energy produced by these resources is called renewable energy. There are five main types of renewable energies.
Solar Energy
Being the biggest and universal source of energy, the sun is one of the most preferred green energy sources. The best thing about solar energy is that it does not decrease with its usage. In fact, the global warming stats suggest that it is only going to increase with time. Perhaps if we start using this resource instead of burning trees and coal, global warming will be considerably reduced. Photoelectric cells are special kinds of cells which change the solar energy into electrical energy.
Wind Energy
Like the sun, the wind is also every where. The only difference is that its speed may vary all round the year. However, there are many areas where there is always enough wind to turn on the wind turbines all year round. Such fields are now being turned into wind farms where the power of wind is harnessed and changed into electrical energy.
Hydropower
Hydropower is the most used renewable energy around the world. Most of the electricity that comes into our homes is produced by dams. The reason is that the flow of water is strong for a longer period of year, and the efficiency of these dams is greater than solar panels and wind turbine. Yet there are a few environmental issues with this type of energy as well, for instance, the loss of aquatic life.
Geothermal Energy
It is a relatively newer kid of energy. Many green loving people are using geothermal energy to power their domestic appliances. It is basically the heat from beneath the earth's surface that is converted into electrical energy.
Biomass fuel
Unlike fossil fuels, these are cheaper and easily renewable. Biomass fuel is a name given to any fuel that is cultivated out of the earth and burned. These can be non-edible parts of crops, alcohol from fruits and vegetables or wastes from human and animals. Biomass fuel is expected to end the dependency on oil.
