House proud is a term that many of us aspire to, but it can be difficult with the pressures and constraints of modern life. Whether it's just for your own peace of mind so you can enjoy home life or because you want to have guests over, here are five steps to feeling better about your house.
1) CLEANING UP If you have nice furniture, decor and space, then maybe consider increasing how often you clean. Running the vacuum cleaner over and polishing twice a week could have a big impact, as upping the frequency of which you clean the bathroom and kitchen. If your surfaces sparkle and your carpet looks free of crumbs, your home will look ten times better and you'll feel happier.
2) DECORATING If a regular clean up doesn't do the trick, maybe you just need some new wallpaper or a fresh lick of paint. Or perhaps you need new bathroom tiles or new kitchen units. Obviously the cost of each varies greatly, but prioritise the elements of the home that you're most displeased with and start shopping. You'll be amazed at the transformation.
3) NEW FURNITURE If your sofa has seen better days or kitchen table has been scratched to bits by the kids, why not consider investing in new furniture. A new suite can transform a room and give your home the facelift it requires.
4) MAKE-OVER A ROOM Ever since Carole Smillie and her merry band of makeover men and women turned up on our screens to revamp rooms in people's homes, our televisions have been besieged with reality shows of a similar ilk. But while some are better than others, they have all shown the dramatic makeover than can be done with a little effort and imagination. Pick a room you think is looking a little tired and picture what you'd like it to look like. Maybe read magazines or watch the aforementioned reality shows if you need extra inspiration.
5) CLEAR OUT Finally, every few months, why not use a Sunday to empty drawers, closets and cupboards and throw away what you no longer need? You may find things that you could sell at a car boot sale to make a few extra pounds or maybe you have some clothes that a charity may need. Either way, a big clear out can give you extra storage space, which can lessen the clutter in your home.
If you're going to be using your vacuum cleaner more often, then you may find you need more vacuum bags and spare vacuum parts.
