Five Methods to Understand God

One who trusts God need not worry about anything as faith is the most potent weapon in the hand of man. However, one must not have blind faith in God without really understanding God. It is wisely said, "You can tell the size of your God by looking at the size of your worry list. The longer your list, the smaller your God." Your size of God depends upon the amount of knowledge one has of God.

Most people try to believe God without understanding Him correctly. They pray to God and seek everything for Him and then they believe that they should get everything. It is like praying Sun and expecting Sun to shower cool waves. You have to know the true nature of God to develop faith in Him. God is not quite like the God of your scriptures nor is the God like described by the priests in the temples and the churches. You also can not know God from other people who claim to believe in God. The knowledge of God has to be direct and inside you.

These are some simple methods to know God.

1. God is Omnipresent

We all know that God is omnipresent. He is present in everyone of us. Hence God represents something which is common in all of us. This is one important clue of God. When we meet different people, we only notice the differences but forget the common nature. You must focus on this common truth that is present in all people and you shall gradually know God.

2. God is in Scripture

You can find a lot of knowledge of God in your scriptures. All Scriptures describe God partially. The only problem is that most people cannot take pain to read the scripture and understand them properly. They just try to learn some portion of their scriptures which suits them the most. However, this limited knowledge of God is quite illusionary as they often do not find the reality fitting into it. Read your scripture carefully and try to understand it as one complete Reality.

3. God is in Service

One of the best methods to understand God is to serve His creation with love and compassion. Since God is present in every creation, hence by making yourself humble before everyone, you get their goodness just like a student gets the knowledge from his teacher. This goodness is the repository of the knowledge of God.

4. God is in Evil

When you see evil around you, you must not hate it like something unavoidable. God has created everything with a purpose. For example, most people get disturbed from the news of corruption, murder or rape. Yet these incidents have a purpose. They are like the red lights of the traffic which tells you to stop. They tell people what should not be done due to the amount of hatred these actions generate.

5. God is in Love

The best method to know God is to understand love. When we hate people, our hatred acts like a shield which stops the soul of the other person to connect with us. Once you stop hating others, love flows automatically and you can know other people as well as you know yourself. Once your knowledge base widens and it covers a large number of people, your knowledge of God is complete as nothing is outside love.

Life is a mystery which can not be explained either by science or by scriptures. Truth has a body and a soul which we call science and religion. Contrary to popular perception, they are not opposed to each other but complement each other like body and soul. In fact, they can not exist without each other.
