Fitness after 50 should be the consideration of everyone that is older than even 25. It is far easier to maintain what you have, in any area of your life, than to try and regain what was neglected?
Talk to your former classmates and most of them at their 20 or 30 year high school reunion do not think that they are in bad shape. That will be the case until they see someone from their class that looks considerably better or worse than they do. You may start to think about what is it that person did to end up where they are today. You may go back to your thoughts about that person when they were in high school. Were they athletes? Did they drink or smoke or use a lot of illegal drugs? We all have an option about what may be the reason for their present condition. At my own 30 year reunion I heard an old classmate before I saw him. His voice was very familiar, even after all of that time. What I saw when he came into view was a complete shock. He looked at least 20 years older than everyone else. Skin, hair, posture and general energy all were that of a 68 year old man not a 48 year old. His secret was, and looking back it was no surprise, that he never quit drinking alcohol to excess as he had done in high school. 3 marriages and his general health were just 2 indications of what he had done to himself. I hope he makes it to our 40th reunion next year.
That story must only be used to help me determine if you are serious about the next step to take to get to a better place during the next few weeks or months. You don't need a reunion to hear the clarion call when there is a major health problem that comes into your life. Is there cancer? Is there a tumor? Is there a heart problems or a major injury? If all of those problems do not seem to be in the mix, then there is always the age old excuse of I am just too busy to do something and I am in pretty good shape at my age. I have more important things to work on, and I did not have the time to spend all day at the gym, nor do I have the money to spend on all of the health foods and supplements that might help.
So why is it that obesity and generally poor health is so common in the western world? The biggest reason I see is that there is not a big enough reason to work on improving their health. There is way too much going on in that is demanding my attention right now. I can always do something tomorrow. I can always pick up where I left off in my pursuit for better health. I can always join the gym, go for a walk, start to jog, ride my bicycle, get back into swimming, lifting weights, doing yoga, stretching, trying to balance my work, family and indeed my life.
The promises to ourselves to improve things do not motivate most people enough to get started. In my experience over 57 years I have seen that unless there is a life threatening reasons to improve our health any other reason is usually not enough to make someone start doing something of benefit. Humans tend to move away from anything uncomfortable especially an exercise program. Even with activities that prove the most beneficial in our lives, like maintaining our health, are moved to the pile of something that we will get to later. Is there something in their subconscious that keeps them, indeed me, from starting something that has some many benefits?
If we are able to control our impulses and then see something of great benefit immediately, then there will be more motivation to keep going and increase the effective parts of our program, and decrease the parts that do not work. The greatest deterrent to our completing the starting process is to get over the mental, not the physical aspect of improving our health and our lives.
