I took my oldest daughter out fishing a couple weeks ago. I have three girls, a seven year old and 19 month old twins. The twins are still a little young to appreciate fishing. My oldest loves fishing though, and it had been a while since we went together.
We got the gear loaded up and headed out to a nearby lake. I got the bait on the daughters line because she's of course afraid to touch it. Once her pole was ready I turned her loose. I got my stuff set up and tossed the line in. Seconds later I hear "dad, I got my line stuck".
She snagged it good and there was nothing I could about it. I got her set up again and on her way, all the while my line is still sitting in the water, which is basically how it would be for the next two hours. She begins casting, never quite satisfied with where the line goes. Pretty sure you know what I'm talking about. She reels it in and recasts repeatedly. Trying harder and harder each time, in fact she was trying so hard to make the perfect cast that she nearly snagged good old dad in the process.
We were out for a couple of hours at least. We had both had some nibbles on our line but nothing exciting. We were having a good time though. I didn't have kids screaming, and yelling, and she didn't have her sisters trying to use her as a junglegym.
Before long though I decided it was time to pack up and get home to relieve mom. I told the daughter five more minutes. Seconds after saying this my daughter screams "dad I got one". Sure enough she did. She got her line reeled in and had caught herself a nice little catfish. She was grinning ear to ear. I was able to get a picture with her and her catch. I then released it, because she's of course equally scared of the fish as she is the bait.
After her big catch we loaded up and went home. I guess all I'm saying here is that sometimes your best fishing trips won't have anything to do with the number of fish you catch in a day. It will have more to do with the experience, and more importantly who you experience it with.
