As fish oil pills become more and more popular, it also brings about the question of safety: are fish oil pills free from side-effects? That is a question I asked in the beginning myself and it is an excellent question.
Everything can produce side-effects, even natural vitamins and minerals can cause damage to your body if consumed in high doses. With all that said though, I have made a list of three common side-effects of fish oil pills and how you can avoid them.
1. Medication interaction can happen if you're on special blood thinning medication, because fish oil pills have been shown to have a blood thinning effect, so your blood can get excessively thin and cause problems. Omega-3 supplements have also been shown to interact with some other medications, so if you're concerned, talk to your physician.
2. Aftertaste has been said to appear when you first start taking omega-3 supplements but disappears after a few days. I personally discovered that the higher quality product I used, the less problems I had with burps, gas and bloating. Many have reported this themselves, so I recommend you do a little bit of your own research too!
3. Antioxidant requirements sometimes go up when you're taking a fish oil. This is why many of the high quality companies use an antioxidant, such as vitamin E in their products. It has even been shown to help when you add rosemary extract into the oil, so you might want to look for those two to get the best health benefits from omega-3 pills.
