If you have cholesterol problems, you may be wondering what you can do about it. Often, your cholesterol problems can be controlled through the foods that you eat (or avoid). Today we look at one of the natural remedies, fish oil, used to help with cholesterol problem.
Essentially, there are 2 types of cholesterol - the one that causes most of the heart and related problem is the bad cholesterol, the good cholesterol helps by removing the bad cholesterol. Study have shown that fish oil can increase the good cholesterol and even potentially lower the bad cholesterol.
The other benefit of fish oil is that it also reduces the level of triglyceride in the bloodstream, which is rather common with people with high cholesterol. One of the sign of developing heart diseases is a high level of triglycerides.
Research and study on the effectiveness of fish oil in lowering cholesterol is ongoing, it continues to show that it can protect our heart health and prevent heart diseases. Scientists are focusing on how omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, and how they relate to cholesterol levels to try to understand why heart disease risks are lower in people who make it a habit of eating fatty fish.
To understand cholesterol, it is necessary to know what is the difference between good and bad cholesterol. The bad cholesterol is bad because it stick the wall of arteries when oxidized. It is also commonly know as LDL cholesterol. If this happens, the arteries narrows and reduces the flow of blood, if this continues to developed into full blockage, then the ensuring result of an heart attack or stroke will happen. The "good" cholesterol is known as HDL cholesterol, and is generally considered "good" because it removes the cholesterol from the arteries around the heart and takes it back to the liver where it can be processed.
The result from research show that fish oils increases the good cholesterol level and that is why it is so beneficial to the body. This means that more cholesterol is being carried away from your heart, helping to prevent heart disease.
Triglycerides are also look into in most cholesterol research.Triglycerides are a type of fat, and people that have high levels of LDL cholesterol generally will also have a high level of triglycerides. Interestingly, high level of triglycerides is also found with people with heart diseases. Some study has found that fish oil seems to have the effect of reducing triglycerides as well.
At the moment, scientists remain unable to explain exactly how fish oil works to improve heart health, though the medical community commonly accepts that fish oil can be beneficial. The Food and Drug Administration has even said that omega 3 fatty acids are beneficial for heart health, and fish oils are one of the best natural sources for omega 3s. We should just consume fish oil even though there is no concrete proof of how it works on cholesterol, especially there is no apparent side effects. As it may be a while before any scientist can find an answer to this wonderful gift of nature
