Few people ever define their purpose in life. Some people live their life searching for something or someone that will tell them what they are supposed to be doing. Other people just don't bother to ask the question of themselves. This article is not going to tell you your purpose, nor is it going to say that you must find one - that is your decision to make. Instead, I'll be helping you to consider what is important to you and then you can define a purpose that works for you.
The first points to make here are to say:
- There is no pre-determined purpose for your life - there is nothing that you are "meant" to be doing
- No-one, except you, has the ability to say what your purpose is or is not
- There is no requirement for you to have or define a purpose at all
- You cannot get it wrong
Finding your purpose is really more about finding what you enjoy doing and the reasons why you enjoy it so much. Some people, for example, really enjoy helping people or being of service to others. This in itself may be enough of a purpose and then they can find something that they like doing that helps them to express their purpose. Of course, your purpose may be more specific for example it might be to help people to live a healthier or happier life.
For a lot of people, finding their purpose is such a big deal that it becomes a really difficult or near impossible task. The truth is that it really doesn't matter what it is, the pressure that people feel to get it "right" is self-imposed. All you have to do is say what it is and then find ways to fulfil it.
Start out by thinking about all the things that you do in your life that you are proud of and that make you happy. Make a list of these things and for each one write down the reasons they are important to you. The more you can get down, the closer you will be to creating an idea of what your purpose in life could be.
The only thing left to do is to say what your purpose is and then find ways to express yourself that reflect your purpose. Align your work and personal life with your purpose and you'll be living a life of meaning. Ultimately if you decide it's no longer serving you at some point in the future, then you have the power to change it and be something else.
Remember, it's better to have one and then change your mind later on, than to never have one at all. Concentrate most on living a happy life, being and doing things that make you feel good about yourself.
