There's nothing more precious in life than the happiness brought on by a newborn infant. This is probably natures way of trying to equalize the toll newborns take on the sleep cycle of his or her parents. But never fear, ways to deal with the needs of your baby as well as get some sleep exist. Although baby's needs will likely still be a challenge to normal, child-less sleeping hours, these ideas will help bring more sleep (and hopefully more peace) to your life.
Couples living in the same household have a distinct advantage over single parents. Although many couples, especially younger couples or first-time parents, tend to both get up and tend to their infants needs in the middle of the night, taking shifts is a much saner solution. Working out in advance who will respond to the baby will assure that the parent who is not on duty will at least get a bit more rest. Switching off each night works well, but there are other options too. The important thing is to work it out in advance with your partner.
If a new parent can tune themselves to the baby's sleep cycle, it's easier to sleep in between when times when the baby needs attention. You can really take advantage of this if you also claim your child's daytime nap breaks as your own. That little extra sleep, even if it's an hour or less, can make all the difference between being able to function and not.
There's a reason that babies or so cute -- it's so sleep-deprived parents can often get help from well-rested friends and relatives to care for the little bundle of joy! Never be shy about accepting help from a trusted friend or family member. Even if it's just for a short time, you probably need the break more than they do. And, seriously, people love babies. Many would love the chance for a little one-on-one time with your infant, particularly those that do not spend every night enjoying that privilege!
Many young parents in particular, end up either bringing their baby to their own bed to sleep in the middle of the night or just having them fall asleep there to begin with. While this is certainly understandable for the simple reason of convenience, you might want to consider otherwise before you get this habit started. Unless you are prepared to have your child sleep with you ongoingly until they decide otherwise, you will most likely have to deal with severe tantrums and maybe even sleep issues with your child at the point when you want your own bed back. It is far healthier for your and your baby if the little one sleeps in his or her own crib in his or her own nursery.
One simple solution to having to deal with a hungry baby shortly after you fall asleep in the evening is to take preemptive action. Get your baby to sleep early enough so you have a few waking hours left before your bedtime. Then wake the baby just before you go to bed and feed him or her one more time before you retire. This can often lead to several uninterruped hours of peaceful sleep for you and a more satisfying night for your baby.
