Finding Medical Billing and Coding Classes That Can Help You in Your Career
Print This Article Ezine Publisher Send To Friends Add To Favorites Post A Comment Suggest Topic Report Author

Any career in the medical fields has pretty good job prospects these days if you have the proper training. Medical billing and medical coding are two of the fields that work out great for those that want to work in a field related to health care but don't actually want to deal with healing the patients (and the blood and illness that are involved in this). In order to get a start in these fields you will have to take medical billing and coding classes.

Medical coding schools usually include junior colleges with these programs, as well as online schools that offer these specific courses. A quick search on the internet will bring up a lot of different options that you can choose from. However, there are some things you should keep in mind when choosing a program.

First of all, you want to be sure that any billing and coding classes you are considering are part of an accredited program. The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education is one of the organizations that accredits medical billing and coding programs. These programs usually last from one to two years depending on whether you are working towards a certificate or an associates degree. Although you can take some courses that teach you both medical billing and coding, there are many programs that teach just one or the other.

It would also be a good idea for you to choose a program that helps prepare you for one of the many certifications available, and that includes training with both inpatient records and outpatient records since these are handled a little differently and you will want to be familiar with both.

If you complete an associates degree program that includes both medical billing and coding classes you will probably be more in demand than if you are just familiar with one of these functions. Medical coding involves going through the doctor's notes and translating the different procedures into the related codes that are used for billing the insurance companies. Medical billing is the process of actually creating and submitting the bills to the insurance companies. As you can see, these functions complement each other. Some smaller offices might prefer to hire one person to handle both of these functions.
