Fly Fishing is just like real estate. The key is location, location, location. If you want to find the biggest fish and get lots of strikes, you have to research where to fish. Other anglers in your community are a great resource, along with local fishing clubs and the department of wildlife. If you are planning a trip out of town for fishing then the Internet can be a great resource.
If you Google best spots for fly fishing there are more than 13 million results. Wading through the websites can be very confusing and time consuming so try and stick to ones that represent a government agency or well known publication. Forbes Magazine has done articles on the best fishing holes and so has USA TODAY. If you want to make hiking in the backwoods part of your trip then check out trails.com. If you are unfamiliar with the area you wish to fish it is a good idea to hire a guide who will take you to the best spots.
Tom Rosenbauer has been fly-fishing for 30 years and wrote an entire book on the subject of where to fish. He wrote the Orvis Fly Fishing Guide for the travel company that he works for. One of his favorite spots is the setting for the movie A River Runs Through It, the Gallatin River in Montana. Rosenbauer says the trout fishing there is the best in the world. He also loves to fish the Colorado River near Denver and the South Platte River another few hours away. Both he says are home to trophy size Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout.
If you live in the east and don't want to travel that far west then he recommends the Delaware River in New York near the border with Pennsylvania. Trout season hits the peak from mid-May through mid-June which is also the time that bald eagles are prevalent in the sky. Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod are also recommended as great spots for striped bass. He says he has pulled in 30-40 pound striped bass fishing right off the beach.
