Field Duck Hunting

Field duck hunting can provide some of the fastest and best action of the season if done right.  Follow these simple tips to have a successful field duck hunt.

1.  Scout the field first.  Watch where the ducks are landing and set up there the following morning.   If there is a rise to the field you can set up here and make your decoys more visible but if there is a strong cold wind set up and the base of the rise which will provide some shelter for the ducks from the wind.

2. Note if the ducks are landing with geese or are they using the field  by themselves.  If they are landing with geese put some goose decoys out and mix your duck decoys in with them.  If they are there by themselves just use duck decoys.  At different times ducks will mingle with geese but at other times they will avoid them.

3.  Use a spinning wing decoy such as a mojo mallard.  Spinning wing decoys work wonders in the fields.  If possible use two or three and place them where you want the ducks to land.  Nine times out of ten the ducks will set up for landing right behind the spinning wing decoy offering an easy shot if you have set it up right.

4.  Use layout blinds and place them either right in the decoys where you can use the decoys to hide them or off to one side of the decoys.  Don't place the blinds in front of the decoys unless you have ample cover (corn field) to hide your blinds.  By placing the blinds off to the side the ducks will be looking at the decoys and not your blind.  If you don't have a layout blind dig a shallow depression and cover up with burlap.

5.  If you have a lot of rain, check fields for flooded spots and place a few floater decoys here.

6.  Once you have your limit leave the field as soon as possible.  If the ducks really like the field they will be back and you will be able to hunt them again.
