Maybe I'm alone in this, but my gut says I'm not. Ficus Bonsai Trees are a lot like caring for an old friend. Over time as you groom them and care for them, they really develop a personality and you might even catch yourself talking to them.
But there are certain things you want to keep in mind. You certainly don't want to take your tree for granted. Some plants you can forget about and they do just fine.. I have one of these in my living room where it can go for months without watering. All it does is stop growing. As soon as I start watering it again, it starts sprouting new leaves and branches!
But bonsai's you don't want to take that laid back approach in most cases. Make sure you create a regular schedule for yourself to do those things that will keep it healthy. Yes, even set an alarm on your smart phone's calendar if you have one. That not only will help keep your tree healthy, but you can be less stressed about duties when you don't have to think about them - just let your alarm keep you on schedule.
When watering a Ficus, make sure it's fully soaked. It might be potted in different ways, but soak it in a bowl or water it a number of times to make sure it's fully saturated. And in between, let it dry out completely. You don't want it to be moist 100% of the time. So I recommend to give it some time in between watering to dry out completely.
Make sure you know what your plant likes in terms of sunlight. With this type of tree it's pretty flexible. It can handle shady areas with a little sun or more sunny areas. But the important thing is not to place it in an area with magnified, constant sun that will burn the leaves.
Besides those two most important considerations - sunlight and watering - make sure to fertilize your plant periodically. Re-pot it every couple of years to keep the dirt clean and fresh. And don't forget to prune and trim it from time to time.
Just those few tips applied can insure you have a healthy tree long-term.
