Feeling Fat - How to Disguise an Expanding Waistline

Expert Author Cindy Rossiter

There are times in our lives when we feel enormous, we hate our tums, bums, arms, thighs etc and - nothing seems to fit properly. Quite often it's a problem inherited from our families or can be caused by child bearing or simply middle aged spread. Disguising the middle age spread seems to be a subject I have become involved in daily - it's a hot topic for me I know it is for others as clients mention it all the time - so here's a few tips I have found helpful with regard to disguising the middle aged spread creeping around our tummy area.

Underwear - Finding some comfortable shapewear is a priority even if you have to bite the bullet and go a size bigger so you can breathe! Magic knickers, thigh trimmers, corsets, bodies can sometimes be the answer for a special event under evening wear or a special occasion outfit. I have so far never met a woman who feels able to wear the stuff all the time - so Gok style shopping wearing the magic stuff for buying everyday clothes is out, but if something for a special event looks half decent without the magic underwear it'll look a lot better with - and is worth enduring the temporary discomfort.

I note that there is no shapewear for men - maybe the next big thing! A word on colour for underwear - flesh colour is the most versatile, black can be seen under lighter clothes and white can be seen under sheer clothes and gets grubbier quicker. Whilst we're still on the undergarments get the sizing right - have a regular check on your cup size - a recent shopping expedition with one of my favourite clients revealed that she was wearing 36AA and was actually a 32D. This affects the way your clothes look - a good bust can provide a lot of balance against a big tum or large thighs. So even if you have a good bust wearing a padded bra can seriously help the way your figure looks.

Disguising the tummy is best done by wearing darker colours below the waist (by darker shade I mean one of the deeper colours within your palette of colours please don't presume that darker means black - for instance for someone with warm colouring with reddish tones to the hair, a green eye and a warm peachy skintone then darker means brown). Also it's important not to buy clothes which are too tight fitting and show up your tummy area, if it fits everywhere else but is pulling over your tummy then reject it and move on.

A bit of draping sometimes helps and for short waisted people wearing longer tops covering the area can be good although the recent fashion for empire line smock tops can look more maternity than stylish on shorter waists. In addition it's worth remembering to play up your good areas - bust, legs, neck area, hair. A fabulous necklace or a good haircut can detract hugely from a problem tummy as can a good pair of heels, walking tall and a great smile. I often get calls from clients after a style consultation saying that others think they have lost weight so if you're still struggling consider some professional style advice.
