Federal Student Loans for a College Education

If you want a college education but do not know how you would pay for school, federal student loans may help. These loans are subsidized by the federal government and often available for both undergraduate and graduate work. The first step to applying for student loans is to complete and submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

The FAFSA may be completed and submitted on the Internet. It should be completed as soon after you file your income tax for the year as possible to obtain funding for the next school year. If you have not yet completed the application, you can still do so, but should realize that funding may run low the longer you wait to file the application. If you are over 24 years of age or married, you will need your income tax information for the year. If you are under age 24 and single, you will also need income tax information from both parents for the application.

In addition to loans, a FAFSA application will help you to qualify for many other needs based financial assistance for your education. The PELL grant often forms the base of your financial aid packet. This grant along with other federal aid is paid directly to the school to offset any fees that you may have. Once all fees are paid, the school will issue a refund check to you for use for living expenses for the term. With the PELL grant, you never have to repay the funds as long as you complete the required number of credits for the term.

Some students will need to have federal student loans to complete their education. The money from the loan can be used to pay tuition and fees, buy books or to pay for living expenses. Students that truly want to have a college education will find that there is always a way to fund their education.
