Fat Burning Phase of A Workout - In Which Phase Do You Actually Burn The Fat?

Expert Author Johnny Palmer

We have all heard the term "fat burning phase" of a workout before, but is there such a thing? Is it just a gimmick invented by the creators of ab machines and treadmills that do everything including make you a post workout shake? Here is the low down on the fat burning phase of a workout.

When you first step foot in the gym, you aren't burning any fat. From the second your body starts doing hard work, it is having to find fuel to use for the work.

Now, depending on what you are doing, normally your food stores that you have consumed during the day are fueling you for the first 10 minutes. After this your body starts using carbohydrate stores, and after this, you start using body fat as a fuel (which is what you want).

This is why you should never eat directly before a cardio workout, as well as getting the stitch, it can stop you burning up as much body fat.

Having said that, it is best to look at your work over a whole day, as this has far more of an effect of concentrating on the "fat burning phase" of your workout. Take in too many calories on any given day and you will just be wasting your time doing cardio as you will have burnt up less calories in the day than you expended.

If you are serious about fat loss, don't worry so much about the fat burning phase of your workout, instead concentrate on the bigger picture.
