For many people, the favorite part of their house is their patio and backyard. They enjoy entertaining and relaxing outside, and for mast people having an attractive patio just increases the enjoyment they derive from their patio. One of the fastest ways to increase you backyard enjoyment is to construct a patio pond. Even if it is nothing more than a simple fountain, the aesthetic value is increased with effective pond landscaping.

The most desirable method of pond landscape is to develop a natural appearance, as if you stumbled upon a simple pond in woodland glen. One quick and easy method is to use rocks for your landscaping. Dependant upon where you live, you may even be able to get the rocks for free. Rocks can be stacked to form a simple wall that may slightly hide your pond. Rocks can also be used to build a simple bench that you can sit on while enjoying the quite relaxing sound that your waterfall makes as it splashes into your pond.

I like to use rocks for landscaping the pond, because it really adds the authentic look and feel to your patio pond. I use rocks in the pond itself to hide the liner, pump and hoses. I also like to use the rocks to intersperse among the plants, to create a natural rugged environment. Use round river rocks in the pond and more angular rocks around the plants to create interest.

If you want to construct a bench for your patio pond, it is really simple. Find a long, flat rock (about 3 feet long) to use as the seat for the bench. Locate two smaller rocks that you can balance the long flat rock on to use as the supports. The only hard part, the long flat rock can be really heavy. It is wise to have someone help you lift the big rocks into place. It is always good to have a tree or thick bush to frame your patio pond. Give special attention to the size and shape of the tree. A huge pine tree may look good in a back yard on a 5 acre estate, but it doesn't fit well on a small suburban lot containing 5,000 square feet. Make sue your pond landscape fits to size of yard you have to work with.

Yes, simple landscaping can readily add so much enjoyment to your backyard pond. It doesn't have to cost a lot, and much of the effort can be done by the homeowner without having to hire a professional pond landscaper. Just try to keep the pond looking natural, with lots of vegetation and river rocks and you can actually forget that you live in a noisy subdivision.
