Exercise sucks! Most of us feel the same way about this topic. We know it's important to stay fit but that's usually not enough to motivate us to get off our growing butts.

As I get older, I notice it's just getting harder and harder to stay slim and my vanity is my main motivator for wanting to exercise. Who am I kidding? I'm not working out to get better lung capacity, prevent osteoporosis or strengthen my heart. I want to do everything in my power to prevent myself from getting the "Wal*Mart shopper figure". I've been noticing my butt inflating as time goes by so I know it's time to bite the bullet, suck it up and start working out regularly again. I know if I'm going to make this a long-term life style change, I'm going to need to find the right physical activity to keep me motivated.

I hate going to the gym and as a germ-phobic, going to the gym is equivalent to me sticking my head in the toilet bowl and taking a big breath in. Nope can't go to the gym. No thanks to oxygen molecules covered in the sweat of strangers. How's that for an excuse not to go to the gym. And now for excuse number two, I also don't have the luxury of space to work out at home so that won't work either.

I had to do some serious brainstorming.

All I could come up with was running with my Dobermans and maybe some tennis. Now recently a friend suggested I join her new Roller Derby team, and I had to think why the hell not? This could be fun, reckless fun, but still fun. So there you go I think I found the exercise or sport for me. (We'll see if I change my mind but for now I'm motivated and that's all that counts.) Without motivation we're not doing squat. So I'm off to find a pair of derby skates.

So in the spirit of trying new fitness activities here's a list of unusual sports that maybe you'll be motivated to try if you're like me and hate exercise.

- Roller Derby

- Ultimate Frisbee

- Fencing

- Paintball

- Archery

- Kung-Fu/Capoeira

- Dodgeball

- Street Luge

- Rock Climbing

- Zorbing (just Google it)

- Elephant Polo (for my Indian friends)

- Horse Riding

- Water Rafting

- Curling

- Orienteering

- Water Polo

- SnowShoeing (for my Canuck friends)

- Belly Dancing

- Strip Aerobics.
