Everything You Wanted to Know About English Half Chaps

Half chaps are worn with a paddock boot to give the appearance of a tall boot. Typically more comfortable and cooler than a tall boot, these are a good alternative. They extend from the ankle to just below the knee and are worn over riding pants. They give the rider added protection on the lower leg and many people wear them during schooling or trail riding. They are made from synthetic material, which can be very affordable, suede, or leather. They come with either a zipper or velcro straps. Velcro strap give you more possible adjustments which is more flexible and can even be worn over western jeans.

To fit you will need to take 2 easy measurements. First, the calf measurement is taken around the widest part of the calf. Second, the length measurement is taken from the back of the knee to the point of the ankle. They come in sizes XS to XL depending on your measurements. They also come in a variety of colors from most traditional black and brown to pink and purple.

If you are shopping for a child, half chaps are a good alternative to an expensive tall riding boot. To fit take the same measurements as above. Children's half chaps come in a variety of colors as well as patterns.

They may be worn in schooling shows and some B circuit shows but always check with the show office before entering a class with half chaps. Pony club shows usually allow jodphurs and paddock boots and do not require half chaps.
