Its funny, I have been in business for myself since 2005 and during that time when ever I have spoken with someone about other successful business people, nine times out of ten I would hear that the successful person in question must have ripped someone off to get to where they were, or that they were into something illegal and that this was the source of their wealth and prosperity.
I guess what strikes me most about the people that make this accusations are not really successful in any sense of the word. They are generally the people who are quick to judge, yet they themselves are unwilling to actually put themselves on the line to make something work, or to take a chance. Sad really, as if they were to do the latter they may then have an understanding of what it actually takes to become successful and be more mindful of the people they are talking about.
Anyway this is more than that right? I personally try to keep myself educated with new technologies and also new practices. One of the sciences I particularly like is NLP. And I like the frame that Chris Howard puts around it and other modalities he uses, and that is this "Techniques are ethic-less, people have ethics" And that does really say a lot. I am by nature a very trusting person, and after being sheltered in the military for 11 years I was somewhat naive when I first got into business. I honestly thought that people would do unto you as you would do unto them. This is not always the case. Not that I am here playing the victim, I just learned the hard way about dealing with some people in Business.
You see, someone is only going to do to you what you are willing to let them do. We as people are truly infinitely powerful, you actually give someone permission to do something to you, either through your actions or your inactions. So the buck stops with you. Are there people out there that would take advantage of you... of course there is... it has happened to me... It happened to me because I allowed it too. I didn't say to the person in question, "ok here I am take advantage of my naivety" On the contrary, however by not being more involved, by not asking pertinent questions, by not conducting sufficient due diligence I actually did allow someone in business to take advantage of me.
So Ethics in Business, I believe this, people are inherently good, I don't believe that people go out to deliberately take advantage of any given situation. I believe that we are all responsible for where we are and I believe that we create what ever is happening in our life. I also believe that if you have the intention of doing business with sound ethical judgment and are mindful of your surroundings and what is happening with any given business arrangement that you will have success, and that you will always do business with ethical people.
