Many epidemiologic studies have been recently done in an attempt to determine whether or not poor diet and lack of physical activity are risk factors in developing Alzheimer's disease or AD. These studies have shown that elderly individuals who had a history of regular physical activity and exercise were at a lower risk for developing AD.
Another study which has been done involving a Mediterranean style diet indicates that there is a reduced risk for the cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer's. An epidemiologic study has also been done combining this diet along with the physical activity and it was reported that these individuals had a sixty percent less chance of developing AD within a five and a half year period.
Epidemiologic Studies on the Affects Physical Activity and Alzheimer's
Studies which have been done show that regular activity or exercise may be beneficial in both preventing the onset of Alzheimer's, as well as delaying the progression of this disease. Physical activity is known to increase the blood flow to the brain which stimulates the brains cognitive skills and may help to improve memory function.
These epidemiologic studies have also shown that exercise also improves physical abilities such as more strength and flexibility allowing individuals showing signs of dementia to bathe and dress themselves more easily than others who have had limited.
The Possibilities of a Mediterranean Diet Lowering the Risk of AD
Recent studies have been done on individuals who consumed what is referred to as a Mediterranean Diet which consists mainly of cereal, legumes, fish, fresh fruits and vegetables. Studies have shown promising results when combining this diet with regular exercise. In individuals who participated in this study over a five and a half year period, only nine percent developed AD compared to twenty one percent in individuals who did not follow this diet or engage in regular physical activity.
