Expert Author Chintamani Abhyankar

A good water filter is very important equipment for your Betta fish. It will provide healthy and clean water which is an ideal environment for the fish.

If you are interested to keep a pond with Betta fish, remember, to keep your pond free of dirt and debris, you should have a good filter. As the pond is usually located outdoors, the use of strong filter maintaining it is essential.

Due to the excreta of the fish, a lot of ammonia is generated in the waters of the pond. The water quickly starts smelling badly and it will look green. Sooner, toxic elements like nitrites will start building up. You will find a lot of substance including dead insects, the rotten food, plant leaves and sticks will start floating on the water.

It is very dangerous for the Betta fish (and for that matter any fish) to survive in such contaminated dirty water. Continuous filtration is essential to remove all these unwanted elements.

First of all let us consider the question of removing all the waste and dirt physically. This can be done by a mechanical filter. All this waste and polluting elements are removed from the pond with a steady flow of water running through the filter.

If you have used sand and beads in the aquarium, they will also help in the filtration process. They will catch the dirt and unwanted particles and prevent them from floating in the water.

Usually submersible pumps are used for filtration in such ponds. They are robust and durable. The only minus point about them is they will make some noise. But irrespective of noise, a powerful mechanical filter will protect Betta fish.

You should also look after the biological aspect of filtration. It is very important for controlling the levels of nitrites and ammonia. The ammonia created by fish waste will have to be converted into nitrites, which can be done by bacteria. Thereafter, some other bacteria will convert the nitrites into less harmful nitrates.

The bacterial colonies will be formed on the filter over a period of time. As they are very useful, you should protect them. You should never clean the filters thoroughly because these bacteria will be removed. If you want to clean the filters, there is a specific process. You should setup another tank for some time with a filter, which will allow bacterial colonies had to be formed. You can use this filter for your pond when you can remove the original one for cleaning.

For a long lifespan of your Betta fish, you must set up both these filters in your pond. There is one more method of cleaning the pond. You can create a hole at the bottom of the pond covered with a small net like a drainage. Water should flow from it and in the process dirt will be collected, which you can remove easily. This will help the filtration system to work efficiently.

You can also set up an aerator which will increase the supply of oxygen in the water. So with the help of the aerator and the drainage, the filter will successfully keep the quality of the water at desire levels.

Sitting by the pond and looking at the beautiful Betta fish is undoubtedly a relaxing experience to take away the stress and tensions from your mind. With a well-organized filtration system, you can enjoy this environment without any disturbance.
