I remember the good old days when playing with other children or with my parents were the norm. Going outside in the fresh air as the neighborhood kids play tag, hide and seek, softball, or simply come up with our own game were entertaining. Rocks, sticks, dirt, and empty boxes were our play-things. And it prompted us to be creative with such ordinary objects.
Now the interaction with people on a personal face-to-face level is dwindling. Computers, digital devices (mobile or not), e-mails, recordings, and button-pushing has replaced the warm friendly contact we've had in the past. Unfortunately, this lack of warm interaction has spread to our family lives.
With so many cool up-to-date devices out there it's hard to avoid using these technologically magical devices. From computers, laptops, iPads, texting, cell phones, instant messaging, mobile gaming devices, Facebook, or what have you, it's easy to get caught up in the moment.
But this could be detrimental to our family life; especially if your work attaches you to a BlackBerry or some other type of mobile device. Family time is in danger. The kids and/or the spouse don't get your full attention which can lead to little to non-existent relationship, anger, resentment, and bitterness.
Between the ages 0-3 years-old especially is a crucial time for children as they develop their communication skills, language, minds, and motor skills. Ignoring your eager-learning child can stump their learning and behavior. But no matter how old your child is, they need a parent's full attention. Your full attention as a parent is a form of love and nurturing which children can detect at any age.
So do yourself and your family a favor. Absolutely NO digital devices of any kind during meals and create extra times for digital-device-free hours during the day. Remember, the present is what matters. The present leads to a better future. Read together, play games, or simply talk to one another to reestablish those valuable moments you could never relive. You'd be surprised as to how relaxing and fulfilling digital-device-free moments could be.
To your continued success!
