Employee Selection - 5 Steps to Source the Right People

Expert Author Meagan Mott

Is your business experiencing difficulty sourcing the right employees? Typically the problems we face when conducting employee selection are a high turnover rate, employees not living up to the initial expectations from the interview or unable to fit in comfortably to the work environment. Here are some tips for screening candidates you can benefit from applying next time you are sourcing staff. This is tried and tested method which definitely results in staff being sourced into the right positions. As a result staff are content to stay in positions longer than what you would have previously experienced.

Step 1

Write a Position description that accurately reflects the position including level of skill or years of experience expected, responsibilities, realistic pressures and work culture.

Step 2

Take time to carefully establish a list of key selection criteria for shortlisting candidates that is necessary to fulfill the role. Next assign a value or rating to each criteria so you can rank the applicants accordingly. At the end of the criteria ranking select the top 15% from this list whom scored highest to move to the next step.

Step 3

Send out a pre interview questionnaire containing questions with essential information that your business requires. Some example questions for employee selection could be:

  • What is your availability to work overtime? (State days/hours per week)
  • Are you open to undertaking further training within our organization?
  • Why are you applying for this position?

Email questionnaire out with a read receipt and request it back within 36 hours. This will rule out approximately 50% of the applicants to date and is a good indication of timeliness and ability to read and follow instructions.

Step 4

Phone the finalists to pre interview them to cover basic information such as ability to communicate clearly (if this is a requirement for the position), phone manner if that is important etc.

Step 5

Arrange interview for the final 8-10 candidates

Finally good luck with your employee selection and shortlisting candidates.
