If you are serious about your marketing then email marketing is a hurdle that you are going to have to face at some point. But how do you run a good email marketing campaign? Here are a few email marketing tips to get the most from your relationship with your readers.
Quality Content
Your newsletters should provide the reader with plenty of food for thought. Think of how many times you have clicked on a link in a newsletter and been drawn into a whole new world of possibilities with your marketing. Make sure that you are telling them what they want or need to hear. Ensure that you are not telling them what you think they need to hear.
Building Trust
Which would you rather get, a sales pitch, a lecture from your Dad or a heart to heart chat with a friend? Most emails that I get are from the salesperson just trying too hard. Some that I get are so matter of fact that I could swear that my Mom wrote them. Imagine how well they go down!
But there are a couple of emails that I get on a regular basis that I swear are like I'm having a conversation with myself or my best friend. They outline almost exactly what I am thinking and lead me to information that answers the questions that I didn't even know needed answering. Spooky!
Needless to say, these are the ones that I look forward to each week.
Keep In Contact
Building trust and confidence takes more than just great content, it takes time. With this in mind another of the great email marketing tips is to create an email sequence that lasts well over 6 months and preferably a year. This way people can really get to know your style, your 'personality' and just how good your information is. It also acts as a filter for those that are serious about keeping you as a reader vs those that are just after a quick buck.
I just don't have the time to open every newsletter that comes into my inbox, especially if I don't recognise who it has come from. But send me a newsletter once or twice a week for 4 months and I'll start to become curious.
Keeping it Simple
Technology is great isn't it? We can now check our emails from anywhere anytime thanks to the various mobile devices. But the downside to this is that we need to keep these small screens in mind when designing our newsletters.
Take A Break
Now this might fly in the face of conventional teachings, but try sprinkling a couple of emails in where you don't sell anything. That's right. Pop in a link to a really cool site, a funny You Tube video or just to your latest blog post if you like, but just have a yak with your readers. Believe me, they will appreciate it.
