Email Marketing is still one of the most cost-effective ways to get your message out. But beware, if you simply blast an email to those who did not opt-in, you will be slammed, and deservedly so, as a spammer.
So if you're a small mom-and-pop or a mid-sized business and you don't currently ask your customers for their email address how can you run an effective email campaign? This can be tricky and a whole lot of work!
I was recently at my dry cleaners and was asked for my email address. As someone in the Email Marketing industry, I was immediately impressed that my dry cleaner wanted my email address to presumably send me offers, coupons, discounts, whatever. I asked the clerk why she wanted my email address and her answer was "cuz my boss told me to ask". "Are you going to send me promotions via email?" I asked. "I dunno", she said.
This brings me to the point of this article. If you are going to run an effective Email Marketing Campaign, it's best to ensure that your entire 'team' understands and is on-board with your efforts.
The clerk should be better at "selling" me on why she wanted my email address. Because I'm in the industry, I basically knew why she was asking, but most people are not in this industry and have no idea why anyone would ask. Example: "Well Sir, we are beginning a Email Marketing Campaign where we will be sending you coupons via email for you to print and redeem here. We would like to ensure that our customers receive the best offers in a timely manner". Too wordy? Maybe. But you get the idea.
Bottom line, I did not give her my email address. Then she asked for my phone number, ugh.
